Will Sherman is a tough Wyoming rancher with a soft heart. The story begins in early 1900’s New York where Will is looking for solace after having lost his son in a tragic horse accident. While resting in Gramercy Park one humid afternoon, Will has a run in with a street thug named Tom. Not so different from his late son, Will takes Tom under his wing and travels back to Wyoming to tend his ranch… but trouble is afoot.
The cast of characters is charming and gritty at the same time. The book feels authentic in the way it deals with the issues of its day. Will is such a genuine father figure that you really feel close with him as he struggles with his grief for his son. Despite the difficulties, Will never gives up on Tom. It is heart-warming to see the evolution of the relationship between the two of them. The rugged terrain and the harsh elements make for a gripping backdrop as the drama of ranch life unfolds.
John McLain’s book feels like stepping back in time to enjoy an ice cold bottle of Moxie and a great cigar. If you have ever enjoyed a western, saddle up and read Road to Reveille…it won’t disappoint!
