I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to die, but I’m pretty sure being strung up like a flag and taking a blowtorch to the crotch is not how I want to go. Poor ol’ Jimmy ‘the Leech’, who suffered this gruesome fate. And that heinous crime scene was just the tip of the iceberg as WagerEasy, a company from across the pond, makes its way into Chicago. In a town once run by ruthless mob bosses, legalized gambling is a threat to a lot of people. So who is to blame for Jimmy’s murder? That is exactly what Eddie O’Connell, a guy with a fledgling PI service, and his uncle Mike hope to uncover before they become victims in this whirlwind tale of scandal, crime and hefty doses of racism.
WagerEasy is a high-stakes, adrenaline-fueled ride through the rougher areas of a modern urban landscape. Tom Farrell wastes no time jumping headfirst into a complicated plot that revolves around a flashy new business squaring off against the old guard. The book is heavy on dialogue and light on introspection and backstory as the fiery characters each struggle to assert dominance. Although the characters’ words and actions seem stilted at times, you’ll find it easy to enjoy this intense crime drama. With the feel of an old crime-noir set in modern day Chicago, WagerEasy has a perfectly flawed protagonist and lots of suspense to round out a gritty tale.
