A Trail of Honesty by J.A. Angelo

What boy doesn’t love a fun camping trip? When the Angelino family goes to a campground for their summer vacation, the three boys get to play games, hike, see wildlife, and do all sorts of other fun things. At one point they have a close call with an angry deer, but their father protects them and explains how to be safe around wild animals. Back at the campsite, they begin eating some apples and afterward tell their father that they threw away the cores. However, when a raccoon raids the campground that night, the parents learn that the boys lied about throwing away their trash.

The primary lesson of this book is an excellent one for any child to learn: Tell the truth. The storyline feels like the author is merely recounting a specific trip that he and his family once took, and the phrasing of the text is rigid at times. A variety of full-page colorful pictures do a great job of depicting the setting and the emotions of the characters. One particularly nice aspect of this book is the Discussion section in the back, which encourages kids to consider the consequences of their actions. Trail of Honesty is a great resource for any parent wanting to teach their children about the value of being truthful.
