It began as a baby, with a dog named Brownie. But Judi M. Roller’s love for animals certainly didn’t stop there. Her memoir not only spans decades but also features a variety of animals including dogs, cats, birds, squirrels, and even a monkey! One particularly interesting feature of His Name Was Brownie is the challenges that the author faced by moving from the Midwest to Hawaii and eventually back. It is obvious, however, that no matter where she lived or what happened among her family, a sincere and deep love for animals would be a constant theme throughout her life.
His Name Was Brownie includes many humorous anecdotes, and Judi does a fabulous job of describing the interesting and comical personalities of the many pets that she has had throughout her life. Some of the paragraphs feel a little long, and the formatting of the book (at least on the copy I was given to review) is inconsistent. The stories, however, are entrancing and overshadow any questionable formatting. Knowing people from Ohio that still talk about the blizzard of 1978, I was particularly interested in seeing how she viewed and fared in that incident. Judi M. Roller has lived a fascinating life and you would be doing yourself a great favor by reading about it. His Name Was Brownie is a must read for animal lovers, and for anyone looking for a great read!
