When Serina was just a young girl, an attack on her planet changed the trajectory of her life forever. For sixteen years she has had a singular focus: to put an end to the rebellion that cost Serina her family. As princess, Serina’s life on the planet Abordise is far from an easy ride. Feeling like she has a lot to measure up to, Serina feels compelled to defeat the rebel forces before accepting the throne. In her stead, her Chancellor Zul has filled the position. Zul also acts as a mentor, protector, father figure, and a lover. But Serina isn’t helpless. She serves in the military and has even taken to computer hacking in her free time.
With its fast pace and enigmatic characters, the book is definitely a page turner. Zul’s relationship with the Princess is purposefully vague. Does he truly love her or is he the bad guy? The political upheaval feels like it is building toward an exciting climax, but since it is such a short story the book ends before any satisfying conclusion can be reached. Future installments are hopefully expeditiously forthcoming.
Though brief, C.P. Night has the beginnings of a delightfully complex tale. On The Outward Edge will keep you guessing right up to the end!
