Single Chicas by Sandra C. Lopez is a collection of short stories focusing on modern Latinas navigating and embracing singleness. Each chapter rewards readers with a fresh chica, and insight into her life. The wide variety of women will appeal to any modern woman. Some are frustrated, some cynical. Others are just downright funny. All of them have a voice worth hearing.
Some, like Lydia, struggle with traditional family pressure to marry and have children. Jessie, in chapter seven, is so disinterested in relationships that she considered the relationship problems of an acquaintance so mind numbing that she considered ‘jamming her fingers so far into her ears in hopes of puncturing her brain.’ The book abounds in wisdom. ‘Dudes can be such chicks.’ Or, ‘No te metas a donde no te llaman.’ The brevity of each story made the book a fast read. In some cases the chapter would end so abruptly that it felt unsettling. However, I felt like I knew each woman with just the opening paragraphs of her chapter. The dialogue was a riot and the editing was superb. Single Chicas is a one-of-a-kind book that is both inspiring and comical.
