The Order of the Key is a real treat for anybody.
Jacklyn ‘Jacks’ Madison is at a milestone in life, her eighteenth birthday! After an emotionally exhausting day at school where she dominated at a track meet and then punched a bully in the face, Jacks hopes for a calm evening with her mom and sister and maybe a little cake. However, even that small hope is dashed when she is attacked by oily looking monsters looking for a quick snack. Even more surprising than the fact that monsters are real is the revelation that Jacks has special gifts to fight these interdimensional interlopers. A war is brewing, and Jacks finds herself an unwitting soldier.
There is a plethora of exciting young adult sci-fi books on the market, but sometimes you read one that stands out from the rest. The Order of the Key is that book. It has everything you want, featuring teens with extraordinary abilities fighting against an unjust system, but then Justine Manzano’s writing style and intriguing characters gives it a little something extra! Jacklyn is a perfect lead with her sharp wit and just a touch of cynicism balanced with a healthy dose of self-deprecation. The addition of a charming love story and an overtly sinister leader of a secretive order add a delightfully entertaining layer of drama. The Order of the Key is a real treat for anybody, and especially those who are fans of the I Am Number Four series.
